Compass House is proud to be partnered with National Safe Place so
we are able to offer our services to youth all over Erie
County!
Safe Place began in Louisville, Kentucky in 1983 as an outreach
effort of the YMCA Center for Youth Alternatives. The Safe Place
program began in response to the many calls to the shelter from
young people who did not have a way to get there. As a result, many
youth trying to cope with personal or family crisis situations
never reached the shelter. To address this issue, Project Safe
Place was developed, designating businesses and community buildings
as locations where youth could easily access help. Its success has
prompted the implementation of this youth shelter outreach program
in over 700 communities throughout the United States.
Safe Place is available to any youth under the age of 18 who is
facing a crisis of any kind. Whether you're living on the street or
planning on running away from home, whether you're afraid to go
home because of an abusive or unstable situation, whether you're
afraid that you're being followed and need a sanctuary, whether
you're being bullied and want to get away--Safe Place is there to
offer you help and safety.
Staff at Safe Place sites are trained to put you in contact with
Compass House counselors, experienced professionals who will listen
to you, assess the situation, and prescribe the best course of
action. If necessary, a trained Safe Place volunteer will come to
the site and drive you to the Compass House shelter, where you will
have a safe place to stay and access to the services you need. In
any crisis situation, Safe Place is there 24/7 to offer help to
youth!
